Taylor Made Designs is a specialist quality bespoke manufacturer of embroidered and printed promotional clothing and other merchandise.

The company had grown over fifteen years to a staff level of twelve and with a turnover of £2.2 million.

Unfortunately during the early part of 2008 the company experienced a temporary but abrupt downturn in sales. This downturn exposed a number of inefficiencies in their systems and controls.

An analysis showed that these inefficiencies were impacting all four of the profit drivers. That is the company's various problems and waste were impacting

• variable costs,
• overhead effectiveness,
• sales volume,
• sales price.

As a result of the combined problems and the drop in sales, profitability plummeted. The company began to experience losses for the first time in its history.

With the help of TBD’s process mapping system and collaborative planning the company developed a series of action plans that collectively resolved the issues identified during the analysis. Improvement projects ranged across the whole business spectrum and included:

• A 5 ‘S’ workplace organisation of the production area and warehouse,
• New software to speed up the Sales Order Processing,
• An improved credit control system
• New measures to ensure accurate pricing,
• Marginal cost analysis to improve product profitability,
• Cash flow forecasts to ensure a tighter control on finances,
• Improved sales administration to refocus the sales effort
• Inventory improvements to cut down on delays to production runs.

In total the six week TBD programme generated savings and benefits of approximately £95,000 for the full twelve months trading.
